The Teaching Artist

“Working with Jess has been a game-changer for me as a teaching artist. As a full-time independent voice teacher, I have often felt like I’m sailing on my own. Jess has been like a lighthouse for me in every single aspect of running my studio. Her expertise in vocal technique, popular singing styles, anatomy and physiology, music business, songwriting, and technology (and pretty much anything else I want to know about) has given me the tools I need to build the business I’ve dreamed of having. She is truly the ideal mentor for the independent teacher looking to run a 21st century voice studio.

“In my own personal journey as an artist, Jess has helped me remember why I started singing in the first place. She has such a passion for helping voice teachers reconnect with the artist within, and the results for me have been magical. After 6 years in classical academia and 5 years performing in contemporary-commercial styles, I feel like I am finally finding my true voice and feeling empowered to share it. I am so grateful.”

Balancing Your Singing, Your Studio, and Your Self

Working with voice teachers is one of my absolute favorite things. We’re a special crew of folx who have a passion for helping others. Often at the expense of ourselves.

If you’re like me and many other voice teachers I’ve worked with, your college degree didn’t adequately prepare you for (1) singing and teaching popular musics, (2) running a private studio, and (3) being an independent artist.

My studio is the place for you if…

  • You’re feeling confused about where to begin as you start teaching popular musics in your studio.

  • You want to start singing popular musics, and maybe have even taken classes on CCM pedagogy, but you just aren’t sure what direction to take for yourself.

  • You’re feeling lost about who you want to be as an artist now that you know you don’t have be a classical singer.

  • You’re starting to figure out where you want to go as an artist, but need some extra coaching to get more clear about your path.

  • You’re struggling to run your studio in a way that can take care of you just as well as you take care of your students.

“My work with Jess has been an invaluable asset to my studio and my artistic life. Not only does she create a safe space to explore new sounds and techniques, she has also gifted me the ability to unleash my artistic self and reawaken my love for singing.”

“In our time together, my relationship with my voice, teaching, and music has transformed in ways I only dreamed about before.”

— Caitlin Duckworth, Founder and Faculty, Houston Voice Studio

“Jess has a deep knowledge of functional voice technique and CCM singing. I love that she takes every question and concern that I have seriously. I feel understood as a person, teacher and business owner. Jess provides me with the details I need to progress as a singer and teacher. If the question is a complex one, Jess will make efforts and we will figure it out. She loves digging deep into vocal technique, anatomy and artistry and I am getting the results that I am looking for. Besides that, she is a kind and warm person who makes me feel safe getting out of my comfort zone exploring new sounds and ways of teaching.”

“Jess is an exceptional voice professional. She is an accomplished performer able to move seamlessly between CCM vocal genres with grace and artistry. As a friend and colleague, one of my favorite things is how easy she is to talk with. I will often seek out her thoughts on challenging voice students or bounce ideas about articles or research ideas. I find it especially valuable in this profession how we can sit and talk voice science and technique for hours figuring out how to resolve vocal issues within ourselves and our students. I always leave the conversations both humbled and more knowledgeable. Her dedication to the art and craft of voice training and performance and helping others achieve their goals, is something that continually inspires me. She is one of the kindest, intelligent, motivated and joyful humans I have the pleasure to know.”
